Belize is susceptible to two types of extreme weather conditions: northers and hurricanes. Northers is a name given to cold air masses that come from the northeast between November and February and bring heavy rains along with cooler temperatures. Northers are a minor disturbance to the natives of Belize. Fishing and diving operations are temporarily disrupted but that is about the extent of it. Backpackers like the cooler and moist conditions brought on by the northers for hiking through the rainforests .
